FR 201. Intermediate French I.3 Credits.
This course is for students who wish to develop further their ability to read, write and speak French. Reading is drawn from a wide variety of fictional works and forms (short story, plays, and poems) on topics of general interest. Students also broaden their knowledge of the French-speaking world to expand their ability to make cross-cultural comparisons.

FR 210. French Culture and Society.3 Credits.
This course, taught in English, provides students the opportunity to learn about French culture and explore contemporary issues in French society. Through individual research projects, students develop a deep understanding of French identity, multiculturalism, globalization and the impact of the French culture in the world. Students identify and participate in French cultural experiences and reflect on cultural phenomena through critical lenses.

This course is for students completing an internship that involves using French and expanding their cultural knowledge.

FR 294. Quebec: History and Culture.3 Credits.
This course will examine the issues surrounding the history and culture of Quebec, Canada from the 17th-21st centuries, with particular focus on the 17th-19th c. We examine the early history of Quebec as a French colony in the New World and its economic foundation as a fur trading outpost. Next, we examine the political history of Quebec and its complex series of conflicts with Britain and the early emerging American colonies during the revolutionary war. In the 19th century, we examine the tragic history of Grosse Ile, an immigration quarantine station in the Saint Laurence river near Quebec City where thousands of Irish immigrants died during the period of the Irish famine. The course ends with a consideration of the development of the modern province of French-speaking Quebec as a part of English-speaking Canada.
